Aluminum + Wood

iolabs is pleased to offer two new, truly unique printing surfaces: aluminum sheets and wood veneer. Both surfaces are coated with emulsion, allowing them to accept and retain ink. We offer two types of aluminum sheets: our own hand-sanded version, which offers a soft, nuanced texture, and Booksmart Studio's version, with a brushed finish. Our wood veneers are smooth sheets of birch that offer a warm tone and subtle grain.

These surfaces will bring out the adventurer in you. Not only are they not your average paper or canvas, their patterns or grains show through the printed images where the ink is less dense, making for serendipitous interplay between substrate and image. Try wood veneer next time you print a line-art drawing of a nature scene, aluminum next time you print a black-and-white photograph of the ocean. But don’t stop there—you’ll be amazed at the possibilities.

Please note: printing onto aluminum and wood is an organic process. We’ll do our best to help you express your vision, but be prepared for happy accidents. Part of the beauty of this process is that we can’t control exactly what the print will look like.
